João de Sousa Carvalho (1745-c1799) was one of the last great composers who studied in the Colégio dos Santos Reis, in Vila Viçosa. This school, created by the House of Brangança in the Paço Ducal was one of the most important musical centres in Portugal. The school has a long musical tradition. Sousa Carvalho is one of the last great teachers in the Seminário da Patriarcal in Lisbon. He studied in Naples. His opera Testoride Argonauta (1780) had great popularity in his time.
